James Gunn Talks the “Importance” of Peacemaker Season 2 for the DCU’s Future and the Possibility of Margot Robbie’s Return

According to CinemaDrame News Agency, James Gunn says the second season of Peacemaker is “hugely important” for the future of the DC Universe and will set up new DC Studios projects. The showrunner and executive producer of Peacemaker attended the series’ premiere in New York this Wednesday alongside John Cena and other cast members.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter about Season 2, Gunn said:

“It plays a major role—without a doubt Superman connects directly to Peacemaker. I should remind everyone, it’s for adults, not kids—but Superman ties into this show, and then in this season we set up other DC projects. It’s very important. We’ll have a lot of guest stars, many of them characters you’ll have seen in Superman.”

The first season of Peacemaker premiered on HBO Max in 2022 as a spin-off to Gunn’s reboot of The Suicide Squad. In Season 1, the titular character worked as an agent for the government agency A.R.G.U.S., tasked with investigating “Project Butterfly” and eliminating alien creatures that had taken over human minds.

Danielle Brooks, Freddie Stroma, Jennifer Holland, Steve Agee, Nhut Le, and Robert Patrick will return for Season 2. New cast members include Sol Rodriguez as Sasha Bordeaux, Bari Noel as the villain White Rabbit, and Tina Meadows. It was previously announced that Frank Grillo will play Rick Flag Sr..

In another part of the interview, Gunn promised to tell the Superman Saga with upcoming projects:

“I’ve just finished an outline for a new story I’m calling Superman Saga. The outline is written, and it’s a very, very impactful outline. I’m working on it and hope to move into filming soon.”

In a separate interview with Entertainment Weekly, Gunn responded to whether Margot Robbie will reprise her role as Harley Quinn in future DC projects. Robbie played the character in Suicide Squad (2016), Gunn’s 2021 reboot, and Birds of Prey. Gunn said:

“We’ll see as we go.”

Regarding the possible return of Bloodsport, played by Idris Elba, Gunn said:

“Absolutely—I’m always looking for a place for Bloodsport and a way to bring him in. We’ll see what happens.”

Season 2 of Peacemaker consists of eight episodes and will premiere on August 22, 2025.
